THE PRIZEFIGHTER SERIES
In 2008 Matchroom Sport launched an exciting new event that has revolutionised boxing.
Prizefighter is the name and the concept features eight boxers at the same weight competing in one evening for their share of the £67,000 total prize fund.
Featuring up-and-coming fighters as well as seasoned veterans, each boxer pairs up in four three-minute round quarter-finals with the winners meeting in the semi-finals and final.
All fights are held in one action-packed evening of boxing which has brought fans flocking with knockouts and excitement galore.
Competing in a maximum of nine rounds and three fights in one night, the event is fast fast and fierce with the winner collecting £25,000.
The first Prizefighter tournament - heavyweights 1 was staged on Friday, April 11 at the spiritual home of boxing – the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, East London.
Belfast's Martin Rogan won a thrilling final with a points success over David Dolan after three frantic rounds that saw the crowd give both boxers a standing ovation at the end.
Later in the year, Prizefighter: Heavyweights 1 received the sportsmanship award at the 2008 British Boxing Board of Control Annual Awards.
The format proved hugely popular with Sky Sports receiving their highest viewing figures for any boxing show in 2008. It also launched the career of Rogan, who, after Prizefighter, then defeated former Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison.
Heavyweights 2 was held in September in Newcastle with Sam Sexton triumphing before similar events were staged at welterweights and middleweights, where Michael Lomax and Martin Murray winning respectively.
Similar nights will also be held at other weight divisions including light-heavyweight and lightweight, featuring more of the best British new talent.
Twenty20 cricket has had a massive impact on the popularity of that sport and brought it to a whole new audience. Prizefighter is having a similar impact on boxing and is quickly gaining a reputation as the most thrilling boxing format.

There’s action from the big men - World Heavyweight Champions Herbie Hide and Lennox Lewis dispatching a whole series of unfortunate victims. But the smaller fighters also provide some remarkable footage.
