Olusegun battles through the pain barrier to win
AJOSE Olusegun admitted he battled through the pain barrier to defend his Commonwealth Light-Welterweight Championship.
Olusegun, 29, also claimed the vacant British belt with his unanimous points victory over Nigel Wright in the headline bout of Matchroom Sport's latest show.
However, Olusegun revealed he nearly had to withdraw from the fight at the Liverpool Olympia due to injury.
"I've had a back problem with the muscle in my spine so I almost pulled out," Olusegun told MatchroomSport.com in an exclusive interview.
"That was earlier this week but the show was made around me so I had to make sure I could come into it and didn't want to spoil the show.
"But it was very close, hours away from withdrawing. I had to go to an osteopath, who did a good job and I was glad I could manage to box.
"I just went out there and tried to do my best but I had to force myself to do things and was making some unnecessary mistakes.
"But, apart from the back, he (Wright) gave me a good fight and a good account of himself so I respect him for that.
"He is a tough guy and I gave him some shots where I thought he would go down but he held up. He's a very tough opponent and quite awkward. My message to him would be to hold his head up high. Not everyone fights me like that."
Olusegun was making the fourth defence of his Commonwealth title and this was the second time he had defeated Wright after the pair had met in February 2008.
Nigerian-born but London-based Olusegun is now the proud owner of the British belt but has set his sights even higher.
"Hopefully I will be fighting for the WBC eliminator then a world title," added Olusegun. "But I'm ready to defend my titles next week if I had my way. I'm a boxer, that's my job it's what I do and I'm ready to work at any time.
"My performance was at about 70 or 75 per cent but I could improve and I could do better. I was making some mistakes which were unusual so I'll go back to the gym and correct them. I'll have a chat with my team and discuss the way forward but at the moment I'm just going to enjoy the victory."
