Owen produces his best round of the season
GREG OWEN produced his best round of the season to claim another top ten finish on the US Nationwide Tour.
Owen (right) fired a seven-under 64 on the final day of the latest event - the Ford Wayne Gretsky Classic - at the Georgian Bay Club in Clanksburg, Ontario, Canada.
That left him on 14-under to end in tied fifth, the fifth time this campaign he has come in the leading ten golfers.
As a result, Owen, who is managed by Matchroom Sport, remains in the top ten in the Order of Merit rankings having earned $202,602 (about £101,665).
However, he has only played in nine tour events, at least four less than all the other players in the top 12. His latest good performance takes him a step closer to his target of an immediate return to the main PGA Tour after he dropped from that level at the end of 2007.
If he finishes in the top 25 of the Order of Merit at the end of the campaign then he will be back playing alongside golf's elite and he is currently eighth.
At Georgian Bay, Owen fired rounds of 69, 68 and 70 to start the fourth day in tied 39th. But four birdies in his first six holes and a further three in the last eight saw him shoot up the leaderboard to tied fifth, two shots behind the winner.
American Justin Hicks claimed the first place after he edged out Casey Wittenberg in the first hole of a play-off.
