Sykes claims vacant British super-featherweight title
GARY Sykes has become the new British Super-Featherweight Championship after clinching a thrilling victory over Andy Morris.
Sykes, who has now won all 15 of his professional contests, gained a unanimous points victory over Morris in the main event of Matchroom Sport's latest boxing show.
In an entertaining contest, Sykes made a bright start but had to work hard to win the belt after a spirited fightback from Morris at the Huddersfield Sports Centre.
"It was a very tough fight," admitted 26-year-old Sykes. "Andy started boxing me and used some clever tactics but I got the decision. But I need to push up in the gym and now I'm going to go full time so you will see a different me next time.
"We've put in some hard work, it's been a team effort and we're over the moon."
Morris, 26, was a late replacement for Ricky Burns, and had previously beaten current Commonwealth Featherweight Champion John Simpson and Rendall Monroe, the reigning European Super-Bantamweight Champion.
Despite the setback at losing to Sykes, Morris did not question the verdict.
"It was a close fight but fair play to Gary as he got the decision so I can't grumble," said Morris.
"But I'm only going to come back stronger and if I clash with him again then I'm sure I would win."
